Bursary for Young People

Do you love to sing?

We still have one bursary place left this year. Get in touch if you are interested.

We’re looking for 3 singers…we’ll pay £100 per term.

Thetford Singers is a community choir meeting in The Methodist Church Hall, Tanner Street, Thetford every Wednesday during term time (7.30 to 9.30pm).   We are offering a bursary to 3 singers to join our choir.  Each singer will be awarded £100 a term having attended all weekly rehearsals and termly concerts. The bursary will last for one year. Applications are open to people in Year 10 and above, in full time education.  You will be joining other young people who qualified for the bursary last year and continue to sing with us.

We sing in four vocal parts and cover a great range of music. Take a look at our website for more information.   We perform various concerts throughout the year and our first gig next term is in December, where we will be perform a variety of Christmas music, both modern and traditional. Some knowledge of reading music, however small, would be an advantage, but it’s not essential. Loving to sing is more important.

To apply for this bursary please write a letter telling us a little about your interest in singing and explaining why you would like to join Thetford Singers and what you feel you might gain from the experience.  We will also ask you to provide a letter of recommendation from an adult.  We will use this as our basis for selection. We look forward to hearing from you.

Your application should be emailed to:

(Information for parents/carers:  Thetford Singers is a choir with around 60 members.  Our Musical Director is Chris Parsons and our Chairperson Alison Northover.  Our Musical Director and at least three of our choir members hold a current DBS check and the choir has a Safeguarding Policy which is available to view on our website).

We have been  very excited to welcome young people who’ve taken up the offer of a bursary to sing with Thetford Singers. This was kindly funded by Thetford Town Council for  the first year and one of the bursary places is now supported by Simon Long Removals.

Here are the thoughts of one of the young people:-

“Five years ago, I went along to the Thetford Voices Christmas Carol day. I enjoyed it, so I went along to the two-day workshop the following summer, which was great fun. I continued going to the carol day and the workshop each year and then became part of Quire of Voices. At the end of the workshop last summer I was asked to join Thetford Singers and was offered a bursary. Although I am one of the youngest there, I am treated as an adult and an equal. Going to Thetford Singers has greatly improved my ability to read music, to understand how to sing as part of a large choir, to develop my voice and has given me more confidence to sing in public. It is hard work, but great fun and we get to sing in a wide variety of venues. I am also able to use the singing with Thetford Singers for the skills section in my DofE.

I now really look forward to Wednesday nights.”
